The 2008 YIP Programme

PSA Activities to celebrate the 2008 IYP

2008 has been declared the International Year of the Potato by the United Nations. All potato producing countries around the globe will be clebrating the year in various ways. The year aims to draw & focus world attention on the role the potato can play in reaching the Millenium Development Goals as set out by the United Nations.

Our campain in South Africa is very much inline with the objectives of the United Nations and focuses on making a difference in the lives of the needy and hungry in South Africa. At Potatoes South Africa we acknolwedge that not everyone is lucky enough to know what's for dinner. It is for this reason we implemented a CSR project, supported and endorsed by Pick 'n Pay, Woolworths, Spar and Fruit & Veg. The campaign will run until end of October 2008 and during the campign period our proud sponsors will contribute 5c of every bag of potato sold towards the CSR project.

To have as much reach as possible, Potatoes South Africa has partnered with heartbeat. An organisation whose mission, values, and objectives compliment what we set out to achieve in 2008. Heartbeat

HEARTBEAT is a Non-Profit (Reg: 015-242), and Public Benefit (Reg: 18/11/13/4841) organization, as well as a Section 21 company (Reg: 2000/001288/08) that was founded in 2000 by Dr Sunette Pienaar. The organization exists to alleviate the suffering of orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) by facilitating change in communities.

The theme for the year is Potato Power you Day! This year not only will Potatoes South Africa cntinue to dispell myths & educate the South African population on he biological and nutritional benefits of potatoes, but Potatoes South Africa will showcase the power of potatoes beyond culinary characteristics.
