      Die Suid-Afrikaanse aartappelprodusent (veral in sandgrond-areas) is deeglik bekend met aalwurms. Dit is egter belangrik dat die produsente wat tot op hede aalwurms vrygespring het met nuwe oë na hierdie mikroskopiese-klein oesdiewe kyk. Deur op ’n vroeë stadium voorsorg te tref kan baie ellende verhoed word.

      (Chris Kleingeld, Bestuurder Laboratoriumdienste, Aartappels Suid- Afrika) Siektes en plae veroorsaak wêreldwyd groot verliese by aartappels. Hierdie verliese is nadelig vir produsente en verbruikers omdat dit die koste van produksie verhoog. Voedsel word dus duurder en produsente verdien minder. Dit is daarom noodsaaklik dat navorsing gedoen word om só die opbrengs per eenheid inset te verhoog. Navorsing kan verskeie benaderings behels, onder andere die teling van kultivars wat beter by spesifieke plaaslike omgewingstoestande aangepas is.
