Potatoes South Africa is a non-profit company incorporated under the South African Companies Act No 71 of 2008 whose main objective is to serve, protect and promote the interests of the South African potato industry.

In terms of its role in the potato industry, Potatoes South Africa operates as an organisation and its structure represents a network of participating role players and individuals who have the development and competitiveness of the industry at heart.

Dr Leah Tsor

Dr Leah Tsror is a Research Group Leader in the Department of Plant Pathology, Agricultural Research Organization (ARO-Volcani Center), Israeli Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development. Since 2013, Tsror has been the Chairperson of the Pathology & Pests Section of the EAPR (European Association of Potato Research) and a member of the EAPR Board of Directors, serving as a Councillor for relations with other potato societies.

Her research interests include epidemiology and management of potato diseases, populations of soil-borne pathogens and host-pathogen interactions. In addition to research, she is the director of the Plant Disease Diagnostics Lab (PDDL), which provides diagnostic services to growers. Current research projects are Blackleg and Soft rots, Powdery scab, Potato Early Dying and Verticillium wilt on Fruit trees.

Dr Peter VanderZaag

Dr Peter VanderZaag is the president of SunRISE Potato Storage Ltd., a large scale farming opertation that Dr VanderZaag founded in 1991 as a partnership with his wife. SunRISE Potato has a breeding programme which focuses on developing processing varieties for long-term storage at lower than normal temperatures, as well as scab resistance and insect resistance using glandular trichome material.

Late Blight resistance breeding work has now also become a key component of the breeding activities. Dr VanderZaag serves as Board Member of the World Potato Congress. In his international career, Dr VanderZaag worked with the International Potato Center (CIP), where he was Chair of the Board of Trustees of the CIP from 2009 to 2012. He is currently a visiting Professor at Joint Academy of Potato Sciences, Yunnan Normal University

Dr Daniel Caldiz

Dr Daniel Caldiz developed his career at the Plant Physiology Institute, as professor and researcher. As a researcher, he specialized on potato crop and storage physiology and hold positions as Assistant, Adjunct and Independent Researcher of the National Research Council (CONICET, Argentina). He is a founding member of the International Allelopathy Society and has served as an external consultant to many different companies, universities and organization around the world.

At present, he is also Co-Editor of the Potato Research journal and reviewer of several international Journals. In December 2000 he was hired by McCain Argentina as Agronomy Manager and was promoted to Regional Agronomy Manager for McCain South America in June 2008. In April 2012 he achieved the position of Global Director of Agronomy R&D for McCain Foods Limited.

Dr Julian Jaftha

Dr Jaftha is currently employed as the Chief Director: Plant Production & Health in the Department of Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries. He focuses on increasing agricultural productivity with the emphasis on sustainable plant production systems, efficient use of genetic resources and managing risks associated with plant pests, diseases and genetically modified organisms. Several regulatory frameworks form part of his oversight; these include: The Plant Breeders’ Rights Act (Act 15 of 1976), Plant Improvement Act (Act 53 of 1976), the GMO Act (Act 15 of 1997) and selected provisions of the Agricultural Pests Act, 1983 (Act 36 of 1983). Dr Jaftha continues to represent South Africa, in the governing bodies/ structures of these regional and international instruments.
