Packaging in the informal sector
The informal sector is playing an ever increasing role in selling potatoes. This sector mainly used plastic bags to re-pack and sell potatoes in small quantities. Since plastic encourages greening, an investigation has already been launched in this regard.
Standards
Potato pockets are continually tested in the industry to ensure that they comply with the prescribed strict standards so that the high esteem that the consumer has for the potato industry is maintained and protected. The logo of Potatoes South Africa is printed on all the pockets to indicate that the potato packet complies with the prescribed standards.
Specifications
There are minimum specifications by which every potato pocket must comply. These new specifications have been published in the Government Gazette and are shown in the table below.
