Table potato production

  • Irrigation / dry-land:     
    • All plantings are irrigated. 
  • Table and seed potatoes:  
    • No seed potatoes are grown.
  • Planting time:  
    • There are two potato plantings, a summer crop, planted from October to March, and a winter crop planted from April to September.
  • Marketing period:  
    • The summer crop is marketed from March to August and the winter crop from September to February.
  • Cultivars:                 
    • The main cultivar is Mondial.
  • Other:
  • The Eastern Cape potato production region (also known as the Gamtoos Valley) includes the towns of Loerie, Hankey and Patensie. Due to the dry nature of this region, all potatoes are irrigated from the main storage dam, the Kauga dam, situated at the top of the Gamtoos Valley.
