Table potato production
- Irrigation / dry-land:
- Nearly 70% of all plantings are grown under dry-land conditions and 30% is irrigated.
- Table and seed potatoes:
- The potato crop consists of 98% table potatoes and 2% seed potatoes.
- Planting time:
- Potatoes are planted from August to December.
- Marketing period:
- From January to September.
- Processing:
- Nearly 25% of the table potato crop is processed.
- Cultivars:
- The main cultivars are Up-to-Date &Mondial - with several others that are also planted.
- Other: The Eastern Free State is one of the biggest potato producing areas in South Africa.
- Because of the large areas planted under dry-land conditions, the yield may vary drastically under extreme conditions.
