Table potato production

  • Irrigation / dry-land:     
    • 78% of the summer crop and all of the winter crop are irrigated.
  • Table and seed potatoes:  
    • The winter crop consists of table potatoes and the summer crop is planted mainly for the production of seed potatoes (about 63% of hectares planted). 
  • Planting time:  
    • There are two potato plantings: A winter crop, planted from February to July and a summer crop planted from August to January.
  • Marketing period:  
    • The winter crops are marketed from August to February and the summer crop from the end of January to August. 
  • Processing:               
    •  Nearly 700 000 x 10kg pockets are processed annually
  • Cultivars:  
    • The main cultivars are:  
        • Mondial. 
        • BP1. 
        • Buffelspoort. 
        • Hertha.
        • Darius and
        • Fianna.
    • Other:  
      • The KwaZulu-Natal region being fairly small in comparison with the other potato producing regions, produces a high quality of table and seed potatoes. Annualy about 4 000 ha are planted in KwaZulu-Natal and this region produces almost 16 million 10 kg pockets of potatoes. About 1 600 ha are registered seed plantings.
