Table potato production

 

  • Irrigation / dry-land:       
    • All plantings are under irrigation. 
  • Table and seed potatoes:  
    • A small amount of certified seed potatoes are produced in the region. 
    • This region is the largest producer of table potatoes in South Africa.
  • Planting time:  
    • There are two potato plantings. An early crop is, planted from January to Marchand the main
    • crop is planted from April to August.
  • Marketing period:  
    • The early crop is marketed from April to the end of August and the main crop from September to February.
  • Processing:             
    • Nearly 25% of the early table crop and 12% of the main table crop are processed. 
  • Cultivars:   
    • The main table cultivars are: 
        •     Early crop: Mondial, BP1 and UTD.
        •     Main crop: Mondial, BP1 and UTD.

The Limpopo potato production region streches from Setlers in the south to Pontdrif in the north. All plantings are under irrigation - mostly from boreholes. The average annual rainfall is more or less 350mm and the temperature fluctuates between 10 - 15 degrees C in winter and 18 - 25 degrees C in summer.

Limpopo the province taking the lead regarding emerging farmer development and BEE projects. They are to be congratulated on this achievement.
