Table potato production

  • Irrigation / dry-land:     
    • All plantings are under irrigation. 
  • Table and seed potatoes:  
    • Early crop: 87% of the crop is planted for the production of table potatoes.
    • Late crop: About 72% of the crop  is planted for the production of table potatoes.
  • Planting time:   
    • There are two potato plantings, an early crop, planted mainly in August and a late crop planted from November to January.
  • Marketing period:  
    • Table potatoes: The early crop is marketed mainly from December to March and the late crop from April to August. 
  • Processing:              
    • Early crop: Nearly 31% of the total table crop is processed.
    • Late crop: Nearly 63% of the total table crop is processed.
  • Cultivars:  
    • The main cultivars are:
      •     Early crop: Hertha, Buffelspoort, Pentland Dell, Fianna and Mondial.
      •     Main crop: BP1, Pentland Dell, Darius, Mondial and Buffelspoort.
