Table potato production

  • Irrigation / dry-land:     
    • All plantings are irrigated.
  • Table and seed potatoes:  
    • 60% of the plantings are for table potato production and 40% for seed production. 
  • Planting time:  
    • There are two potato plantings, a winter crop, planted from May to October, and a summer crop planted from November to April.  
  • Marketing period:  
    • The winter crop is marketed from September to February and the summer crop from March to September.
  • Cultivars:
    • The main cultivars are:  BP1, Mondeal, Vanderplank and Astrid.
  • Other:   
    • This area is situated on the Cape South Coast, which is a popular holiday area from December to April. During this period when plenty of potatoes are consumed in the region. 
    • This is not a large potato production region.
