Table potato production
- Irrigation / dry-land:
- All plantings are irrigated.
- Table and seed potatoes:
- 60% of the plantings are for table potato production and 40% for seed production.
- Planting time:
- There are two potato plantings, a winter crop, planted from May to October, and a summer crop planted from November to April.
- Marketing period:
- The winter crop is marketed from September to February and the summer crop from March to September.
- Cultivars:
- The main cultivars are: BP1, Mondeal, Vanderplank and Astrid.
- Other:
- This area is situated on the Cape South Coast, which is a popular holiday area from December to April. During this period when plenty of potatoes are consumed in the region.
- This is not a large potato production region.
