Table potato production

  • Irrigation / dry-land:
    • Nearly 99% of the plantings is produced under irrigation while 1% of the crop is produced under dry land conditions
  • Table and seed potatoes:
    • The potato crop consists of 98% table and 2% seed potatoes
  • Planting time:
    • Two harvests are being planted in a year. The Early harvest is planted from August to November and the late harvest is planted from December to January
  • Marketing period:
    • The early harvest is marketed from December to April and the late harvest is marketed from May to September.
  • Processing:
    • Under normal conditions none off the potato crop is processed
  • Cultivars:
    • The main table cultivars are Mondial. BP 13,(Buffelspoort) and Valor
Although some potatoes are produced in Verkeerdevlei, Bainsvlei and Koffiefontein, the largest part of the South Western Freestate crop is planted around Petrusburg
