Training

PROJECT NAME: FARM BASED TRAINING
PROJECT NUMBER: 3733-08-TRF

Problem/ Current situation

A culture of training and development is absent and many farmers do not know where or how to access appropriate training. Training is expensive and farmers are not motivated to make the investment until they have experienced the benefits.

Goals

  • To assist potato farmers involved in transformation projects by supplying proper training for their trustees
  • To uplift the skills of farm workers focussing on decision making and the understanding of their role
  • To assist developing potato farmers with technical and business skills to enable them to farm profitably
  • To establish a culture of training and development in the mentioned areas
  • To provide real empowerment in share-holding land reform projects by providing trustees with the skills necessary to understand the projects
  • To improve the quality of potato production by improving the knowledge base of those producing the potatoes.
Objectives

  • To provide a limited number of short courses to the farming community
  • To ensure development for their workers and to ensure sustainability and good agricultural practices
  • To identify and develop farm workers/trustees skills
  • To train and develop managers skills
  • To develop farmers to work more effectively and efficiently
  • To train and assist entrants into agriculture
Action plan

  • Identify the training needs amongst individual farming enterprises
  • Develop an annual training plan to fulfil the needs
  • Enlist the service providers to fulfil the training needs
  • Implement training
  • To start with short courses and in the long term help people become good managers and more independent
Success criteria

  • Professional (accredited) training for trustees, entrants into agriculture and junior managers
  • If everybody gives their co-operation and commitment to training we will experience some success
Assumptions, risks, obstacles

  • Farmers may withdraw their entrants
  • Students may quit the course prior to completion
  • If we are unsuccessful in getting the courses off the ground
  • If the farmers do not participate in this opportunity that is available to them
