Mentorship
PROJECT NUMBER: 3775-08-TRF
Problem/ Current situation
The Oppermans project is ideal for growing seed potatoes primarily because they have virgin soil. The family farm consists of 34000 hectares next to the Orange/ Riet Irrigation Scheme canal. Water rights for 210 hectares are already allocated to them. The Department has allocated R15 million to the project for infrastructure development as well as funding of a percentage of inputs costs. The project decided to form an Advisory Committee which comprises the beneficiaries, Potatoes SA, ABSA, Orange Riet Water Users’ Association and the Department of Agriculture.
