First-time potato producers take root in Randfontein
Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
A new chapter in agricultural development is unfolding in the farming community of Pelzvale in Randfontein. An emerging producer has successfully ventured into potato production for the very first time, marking a significant milestone not only for the individual, but also for the broader smallholder farming landscape in Gauteng. This achievement forms part of the small-grower programme, an initiative led by Potatoes SA’s transformation department.
With guidance from Potatoes SA, the producer has transitioned from limited experience to confidently managing a potato crop from planting to harvest. This journey highlights the importance of structured mentorship and capacity building in transforming agricultural potential into tangible success.
Collaboration across the chain

To celebrate the project’s success, Potatoes SA hosted an information and harvest day in Pelzvale. The event brought together key industry stakeholders, including Khula, the Agricultural Produce Agents Council (APAC), and Joburg Market. Their presence underscored the importance of collaboration across the agricultural value chain in supporting emerging producers.
The event served multiple purposes: It provided a platform to showcase the producer’s achievements, facilitate knowledge sharing, and create opportunities for market linkages. Attendees engaged in discussions on production challenges, market access, and sustainable farming practices, further enriching the learning experience for beneficiaries.
The success achieved by this first-time potato producer demonstrates the impact of targeted development programmes such as the small-grower initiative. By combining practical training, input support, and stakeholder engagement, the programme is helping to build a new generation of capable and confident potato producers.
As the producer reflects on their first harvest, the experience represents more than just a successful crop – it marks the beginning of a sustainable farming journey. With continued support and improved access to markets, emerging producers in areas such as Pelzvale are well-positioned to contribute to food security, rural development, and economic growth in South Africa. – Dikgetho Mokoena, transformation specialist, Potatoes SA
