Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

The grand opening of GRIMME Africa’s new branch at Fisantekraal in Durbanville, Cape Town, on 30 January brought together the Grimme family, friends, dealers, and producers to celebrate and welcome the German-based global market leader’s specialised services and technical knowledge to the region.

The new branch is headed by managing director JP Smit and aims to streamline the supply chain and ensure that essential parts and machinery are readily available to meet the demands of the agricultural season. The branch offers extensive stock consisting of genuine parts and machinery.

“We had a fantastic event with plenty of interesting discussions and networking opportunities,” said Philipp Grimme, a fifth-generation family member and managing partner of the GRIMME Group (the group was established in 1861). “I lived in Johannesburg for several years, and my brother Christoph and I shared a vision of establishing a presence in South Africa. Our goal was to open a branch that would support potato producers, among others. We subsequently appointed Smit as the first local employee at the Cape Town based GRIMME facility. This set in motion the entire process of finding the right location and premises.”

A plan for the south

Smit developed a business plan focussed on backup support and spare parts for dealers and producers in South and sub-Saharan Africa. “At the launch we welcomed producers and dealers from as far as Zambia and were able to thank them for their support over the last few years,” he said. “We are excited about being here and look forward to supporting them all the way.”

Guests from all over the country and Zambia attended the launch. These potato producers are, from the left, Kevin Puffett, Julian Odell, Jurie van Zyl, and Derek Anderson.
The event was relaxed with only a few short speeches made, one by minister of agriculture, John Steenhuisen.

Minister of agriculture John Steenhuisen has known the Grimme family for quite some time and also spoke at the launch. He said it is heartwarming to see the family investing in and putting down roots in South Africa. He told Plaas Media: “This is an incredibly dedicated family who have kept the agricultural sector going for more than 165 years with high quality, cutting-edge technology and equipment. It is heartening that they have shown confidence in our country and are willing to locate their regional headquarters here, making South Africa the hub for business locally and further afield.”

Advanced technology

GRIMME manufactures over 150 high-performance machines for planting, cultivating, harvesting and storing potatoes, other root crops such as sugar beets, and various vegetables. With regard to potato machinery, the manufacturer produces a full line of equipment specifically designed for the entire potato production line, including machinery that performs the following tasks:

  • Soil preparation and cultivation (bed formers, hilling).
  • Planting technology (cup planters).
  • Harvesting technology (trailed, bunker, and self-propelled harvesters).
  • Handling and storage technology (conveyers, graders, loaders).

Parts and machines at your doorstep

Potato and vegetable growers in South Africa and the sub-Saharan Africa region now not only have local expertise at hand, but also quicker access to original GRIMME parts and the latest technological innovations. The new branch aims to streamline the supply chain and ensure that essential parts and machinery are readily available to meet the demands of the agricultural season.

The branch is staffed with a dedicated team of local experts who bring specialised service and technical knowledge to the region. The team is committed to providing tailored solutions to help producers optimise their operations and increase productivity. Now they are also in a position where the unique needs of customers are better understood and addressed.

Stronger after-sales service

In addition to faster access to parts and machinery, the new Fisantekraal branch enhances the company’s after-sales service capabilities. With local service capacity, downtime is significantly reduced for customers, offering quicker response times, effective troubleshooting, and comprehensive training programmes. The goal is to keep customers’ operations running at peak performance and prevent any disruptions during critical farming periods.

From humble beginnings

Starting as a family-run blacksmith’s forge in Germany in the town of Damme, Lower Saxony, the family company GRIMME was founded in 1861. As the founder, Franz Grimme took the first small steps by focussing on repairs and simple tools after which his vision expanded to turning into a specialist manufacturer of potato, beet, and vegetable harvesting technology.

Today, more than 3 300 employees work across 36 locations worldwide within the group of companies. GRIMME machines are sold in over 120 countries by local dealers. The company also has its own subsidiaries and service agencies in key markets. – Carin Venter, Plaas Media
