The Potatoes SA marketing team continues its involvement in sporting activities and events where potatoes are positioned as a valuable source of energy for active young sportsmen and women. Sport plays a vital role in society by uniting people, promoting healthy lifestyles, and fostering a sense of national pride.

In March and April this year, Potatoes SA was involved in two major sporting tournaments: the Waterkloof Netball Festival in Pretoria, Gauteng, and the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival in Botha’s Hill, KwaZulu-Natal.

Waterkloof Netball Festival

The Hoërskool Waterkloof annual netball festival attracted teams from across South Africa and neighbouring countries, with more than 120 teams competing on the court and showcasing their netball talent. Local and international teams featured prominently, playing multiple matches over five days and demonstrating strong performances in both junior and senior divisions. The festival provided the netball players with high-level competition and a valuable opportunity to develop their skills on a big stage.

Young and old learned more about potatoes and their role in an athlete’s diet. On the final day of the tournament, attendees enjoyed baby potatoes cooked and seasoned with spices.

Learners had the opportunity to utilise the Potato Nation Chill Zone, where they could take a break from their sporting activities to compete in other relaxing games such as fingerboard, tic-tac-toe, foosball, and digitally peeling a potato to try and beat the best time. The winners each walked away with branded Potato Nation bucket hats, pencil cases, and Potatoes SA socks.

The netball festival was streamed on the SuperSport Schools app. Potatoes SA’s logo was proudly displayed next to the scoreline, raising brand awareness and associating potatoes with an active lifestyle.

Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival

The Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival brought together 28 rugby teams from South Africa and Zimbabwe. The event featured matches between top-ranked schools, performances from primary schools, and a girls’ division – all of which were streamed on the SuperSport Schools app. Supported by various organisations, the festival also focussed on collecting sports gear for outreach initiatives. This was more than just a tournament; it was a family-friendly celebration of rugby culture.

Potatoes are powerful

At both sporting events, emphasis was placed on the fact that potatoes deserve more recognition as a powerful, athlete-friendly food, as they are often overlooked or unfairly criticised. Potatoes are, in fact, a natural, nutrient-dense source of energy that can support performance, recovery, and health. Potatoes are packed with complex carbohydrates, providing sustained fuel for training and competition, while their potassium content helps maintain muscle function and hydration balance.

Rather than being seen as ‘simple’ or ‘boring’, potatoes should be recognised as a practical and effective staple in an athlete’s diet. When prepared in healthy ways, they offer a winning combination of nutrition and performance benefits, proving that sometimes the simplest foods can be the most powerful. – Liezel Nkadimeng
